Small Black

28 Oct

courtesy of myspaceNew Chain is the debut long-player from New York’s Small Black. Richly coloured and thickly layered, it is an absorbing, eclectic and obsessive body of work. The Brooklyn group have succeeded in melting together locked and popped drum-shudder, gauzy spirographic synths and subtly contagious, half-remembered melody into ebullient bursts of evocative, subliminal and thoroughly modern pop. The songs are equally informed by the rhythmic bounce and stylistic swagger of more left-leaning contemporary radio rap and R’n’B as it is the submerged kaleidoscopic swirl of the early 4AD dream factory.

The other night I had the opportunity to work with the Drums and Surfer Blood at the Clubhouse in Tempe, Arizona. The Drums were a band that I’ve been wanting to see for awhile and they did not disappoint.

Cloud Nothing

14 Sep

Cloud Nothing is the brainchild of 18 year old Cleveland resident Dylan Baldi, Late in 2009, he started recording a bunch of catchy indie rock songs on his comuter in the basement of his parent’s house. Dylan wasn’t so concerned with them being lo-fi. But since he only had his simple computer and a crappy microphone that’s the way they turned out. Since their first show in December opening for Real Estate and Woods, the band has played SXSW, toured with Wavves, and played shows with Titus Andronicus, Parts and Labor, Best coast, and Kurt Vile. Their live shows have become super tight, displaying an intensity and precision rarely seen in bands of any age.

Cristina

Wandering around downtown Phoenix on a Sunday afternoon is quiet the spectacle. Unless there’s a sporting event, the city is a complete ghost town. Last Sunday, a friend of mine and myself went on a walkabout, scouting locations to possibly shoot for different projects that I wanted to accomplish.

I found a gem of a parking garage located in the heart of downtown unfortunately as we started shooting a security guard came and quickly kicked us out. Needless to say, I was quite bummed about the whole experience especially since we weren’t bugging anybody. Lesson Learned. Prior to finding the parking garage we found a really interesting alley so in the end it all worked out but the search for new locations continues.

Three Six Mafia

2 Aug

I had the opportunity to shoot Three Six Mafia for the second time in my life and let me tell you, these guys know how to put on a show. I arrived at the venue just as they were going on and caught somewhere between 5-12 songs as I couldn’t tell the difference between songs.

Enjoy
