Small Black

28 Oct

courtesy of myspaceNew Chain is the debut long-player from New York’s Small Black. Richly coloured and thickly layered, it is an absorbing, eclectic and obsessive body of work. The Brooklyn group have succeeded in melting together locked and popped drum-shudder, gauzy spirographic synths and subtly contagious, half-remembered melody into ebullient bursts of evocative, subliminal and thoroughly modern pop. The songs are equally informed by the rhythmic bounce and stylistic swagger of more left-leaning contemporary radio rap and R’n’B as it is the submerged kaleidoscopic swirl of the early 4AD dream factory.

Cloud Nothing

14 Sep

Cloud Nothing is the brainchild of 18 year old Cleveland resident Dylan Baldi, Late in 2009, he started recording a bunch of catchy indie rock songs on his comuter in the basement of his parent’s house. Dylan wasn’t so concerned with them being lo-fi. But since he only had his simple computer and a crappy microphone that’s the way they turned out. Since their first show in December opening for Real Estate and Woods, the band has played SXSW, toured with Wavves, and played shows with Titus Andronicus, Parts and Labor, Best coast, and Kurt Vile. Their live shows have become super tight, displaying an intensity and precision rarely seen in bands of any age.

Twin Shadow

25 Aug

It’s high noon in Brooklyn but its always midnight on southern, dead end suburban streets. Here, there is total silence except for the house at the very end, where inside a tin roof garage, teenagers are kissing for the first time. The humidity is too great, the boys peel off white t’s and the girls cheeks are flushed, beet red under the garage’s two fluorescent stripes. In a pond behind the house an alligator waits for a snow birds’ Pomeranian to take its night stroll. A child is sleep walking for the first time. Some one is running away for the last time. The music is too loud on the 12 D battery boom box radio, the cops are on their way. It’s at this moment you hear the music of Twin Shadow on a radio station transmitting suburban ghost dreams that sound like a slow motion shot of a cannon, singing about spirits, visions, and aural hallucinations cutting through the first American night.

Avi Buffalo Fall Tour

18 Aug

Avi Buffalo is the adopted name of Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, an 18 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Long Beach, CA. Avi Buffalo is also the name of the band he formed with friends and like-minded collaborators Sheridan Riley (drums) and Arin Fazio (bass).  As described by Pitchfork, “Avi Buffalo seem graceful beyond their years as songwriters. As many starkly intimate moments as they muster, a few of their tunes unfurl into near-epic lengths, gallantly breezing through moods and motifs. Snatches of Wilco’s easy early-2000s amble, Built to Spill’s curly fretwork, and Shins-y shuffle turn up everywhere here, occasionally all at once.”
